Call for Artists

“Abstraction”

Deadline for Submission October 19, 2019

River Arts announces a call to artists for “Abstraction”.  Artists may submit up to three works for this juried show.  The deadline for entry is Saturday, October 19 at 4 pm. River Arts is pleased to announce that Michel Droge will jury this show.  Artists are invited to submit works based on their interpretation of the theme “Abstraction.”

Works in all mediums (including sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, fiber) will be considered.  Entry fee (covers up to 3 pieces) is $15 for members and $25 for non-members.  Works must be securely wired for hanging and clearly labeled with artist’s name, phone number and title on the back.  No wet work, please.

All works must be for sale.  Artists received 65% and River Arts retains 35% commission on all sales.

The juror, Michel Droge is a painter, printmaker and educator whose work engages with the environment and the human condition in an era of conscious disruption and change. They are committed to a practice steeped in the idea that the studio and a practice of public engagement is a laboratory that holds space for new ideas and thinking to emerge. Through their work they embrace a layering of environmental research, material exploration, ancient mythology and the landscape vernacular as a route to explore the present day cultural and ecological crises.

Michel is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant and two Maine Arts Commission Grants. They have been awarded fellowships and residencies at the Tides Institute, The Joseph Fiore Foundation, The Stephen Pace House and The Saltonstall Foundation.

Michel’s solo exhibitions have been at the Maine State Capitol, University of Maine Farmington, June Fitzpatrick Gallery, Maine Audubon Society and the Frank Brockman Gallery. Their work has been included in national and international exhibitions amongst which include the Bates College Art Museum, The University of Maine, The Cue Art Foundation in NYC, ICA at MECA, Gould Academy, Boston University and Brandeis University.

Artists will be notified by Wednesday, October 23 by email or phone of the juror’s decision. Entry forms are available online at riverartsme.org and at the gallery: 241 U.S. Route 1 North, Damariscotta.  The public opening reception for “Abstraction” is scheduled for Friday, October 25 from 5-7 pm.  This exhibition will run until November 23, 2019.
